Hello everyone! Welcome to the 2024 Figueroa wildflower season!

California poppies (Eschscholzia californica): As we all know, the California poppy is the State flower. California poppies can be found in areas that provide full sun. They are drought resistant and normally continue to bloom from spring to summer unless they are host plants to California dodder (Witch’s Hair), in which case, they are only around until the California dodder takes over. There are different varieties of California poppies, ranging from deep orange to light yellow, from 3 to 4 inches in diameter to 1 to 2 inches. Regardless of their size and color, one thing for sure is that they are all beautiful and put on quite a show!

If you would like to be added to the Figueroa Wildflower Update email list, please send your request to Helen Tarbet by email at helen.tarbet@usda.gov.
